Conditions Treated
Lower Back Pain
Lasting relief from one of the most common conditions we treat
Lower back pain is one of the most prevalent health complaints in the world — and one of the conditions for which acupuncture has the strongest evidence base. Whether your pain is acute from an injury or chronic and long-standing, Traditional Chinese Medicine offers an effective, drug-free path to relief by addressing both the immediate pain and the underlying imbalances that allow it to persist.
Understanding Lower Back Pain in Eastern Medicine
In TCM, the lower back is considered the 'dwelling of the Kidneys.' Kidney deficiency — whether of Yang (warming, activating energy) or Yin (cooling, nourishing essence) — is the most common root cause of chronic lower back pain, producing a dull, persistent ache that worsens with fatigue and improves with rest. Acute pain from injury or overexertion typically involves the invasion of Wind, Cold, or Dampness into the channels of the lower back, causing stagnation of Qi and Blood that manifests as sharp, stabbing, or fixed pain. Prolonged sitting, emotional stress, and constitutional weakness can all contribute. Accurate differentiation of the pattern guides the selection of acupuncture points and herbal formulas for each individual patient.

How We Treat Lower Back Pain
Acupuncture is highly effective for both acute and chronic lower back pain. For acute presentations, treatment focuses on moving stagnant Qi and Blood, releasing muscle spasm, and clearing Wind-Cold-Damp from the channels — often producing significant relief within one to three sessions. For chronic pain rooted in Kidney deficiency, a longer course of treatment is recommended to tonify the underlying deficiency, strengthen the lumbar region, and prevent recurrence. Local points along the Bladder and Governing Vessel meridians in the lower back are combined with distal points on the hands and feet that have a powerful effect on the lumbar region. Herbal medicine, moxibustion (warming therapy), and cupping may also be incorporated depending on your pattern. Postural and lifestyle guidance is provided to support recovery and reduce the risk of flare-ups.
Lower back pain is among the most extensively researched conditions in acupuncture medicine. The NIH and WHO both recognize acupuncture as an effective treatment for acute and chronic lower back pain. A landmark review published in the Archives of Internal Medicine found acupuncture significantly superior to both conventional care and sham acupuncture for chronic back pain.
